“I like the hands-on aspect of Therapeutic Endoscopy and being able to do sophisticated procedures that can really benefit patients”
– Dr. Anupam Singh
Dr. Anupam Singh comes from a family devoted to medicine, so it was not surprising that he decided to become a physician. When it came time to choose a specialty he decided on Gastroenterology. “I enjoy Gastroenterology because it is a very unique field having both diagnostic and technical aspects of patient care,” he explains. “I like the hands-on part of it and being able to do sophisticated procedures that can really benefit patients.”
In addition to his fellowship in Gastroenterology, Dr. Singh completed a fellowship in Therapeutic Endoscopy which allows him to perform highly advanced endoscopic procedures to assist patients. Some of the procedures he performs include endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), ultrasound-directed biopsies, endoscopic stent placement and other treatments. “Using these advanced procedures, we can safely and effectively treat many gastroenterological problems safer and easier in a minimally invasive way than ever before.”
According to Dr. Singh, the most important aspect of a physician-patient relationship is trust. “I want patients to have a good understanding of what possible outcomes they can expect of their conditions,” he explains. “I think that if you are sincere and honest with people, they really respect that.”
Dr. Singh sees patients for a range of gastroenterological problems including pancreatitis, bile duct stones, diagnosis of cancers of the gastrointestinal tract, pancreatic cysts, small bowel obstructions, endoscopic resection of advanced gastrointestinal polyps and other issues. He also performs screening procedures including colonoscopies and pancreatic cancer screening.
Dr. Singh would like to see more people take advantage of diagnostic screening to detect cancer. “Colonoscopies have proven highly effective in reducing deaths from colon cancer and now we can screen for pancreatic cancer in high-risk patients. So, I will encourage everyone to take advantage of these screening tests if their doctor recommends them.”
In his spare time Dr. Singh enjoys hiking, reading, traveling to different destinations across the world, and spending time with his family.
